Do you question yourself on being good enough or is that just me? Ha! Don’t worry. I know I am not alone.
If you have been saved by Jesus you may have accepted that there is no deed you can do to ever deserve your position in eternity. We are saved by faith and not by works alone. The truth is we aren’t deserving, BUT Jesus says we are good enough. So how can we be good enough yet undeserving all at the same time? I bet as humans we can figure out numerous and amazing ways to overcomplicate that question.
If you have been around Christians for very long you will have heard that God will meet you where you are on life’s path. He doesn’t want to wait until you accomplish something great. He doesn’t want to see how your next decision pans out. He wants to meet you where you are wherever that is. Do you know what that translates to? You are good enough just the way you are. There is nothing you could do to deserve/earn His love because it’s already yours. There is nothing you can do to be unreachable by God, so how is it that you could be “not good enough?” You don’t get to say what is and isn’t good enough. That is God’s call. Your job is to receive it, believe it, and love people as the result of it. They are also good enough, and He loves them no matter what too.
1 John 4:7-12 (NLT)
Loving One Another
7 Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. 8 But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
9 God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 10 This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
11 Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely ought to love each other. 12 No one has ever seen God. But if we love each other, God lives in us, and his love is brought to full expression in us.
I often fall in a trap of feeling like I am going to miss something. I worry I don’t have a broad enough perspective on things, that I am not understanding things all the way around. I fear those things within my faith too. Maybe I am not hearing God because I am not listening well enough. Maybe I am too focused on what is in front of me to be truly living a life for God. These are doubts delivered as truths in a fair share of sermons heard throughout my upbringing. Those messages aren’t wrong, but navigating through how to make that happen can cause a lost person such as myself a lot of anxiety. How do you tangibly listen well enough? How do you take care of what God gave you and enjoy the gifts He made for you if you aren’t ever focused on what is in front of you? These questions inspire a balance. We need God in our daily lives, but we can do nothing to deserve His presence.
We don’t deserve His presence because we don’t have to do anything to earn it.
Our love for God and belief that Jesus IS is good enough. If you go around worrying you will miss something, you will end up focusing more on what you are missing than on what God actually is trying to show you. Therefore you might miss everything while you’re worried about missing one thing. Are you dizzy yet?
Let’s take the complications out of faith and being Christian. We believe in Christ as our salvation. We are all in the same boat of needing love we can’t earn. We are God’s children, and therefore, we must believe He loves us because of that. The greatest gift we can ever give back to Him is our love to His other children. Don’t worry so much about leaving a stone unturned. Instead cast those stones aside and let your acceptance of God’s love and Jesus’ sacrifice guide you-you’ll miss a lot less if God is driving.
